Writing at the height of her powers, Alice Hoffman conjures three generations of a family haunted by love.

Cool, practical, and deliberate, John is dreamy Arlyn's polar opposite. Yet the two are drawn powerfully together even when it is clear they are bound to bring each other grief. Their difficult marriage leads them and their children to a house made of glass in the Connecticutcountryside, to the avenues ofManhattan, and to the blue waters of Long Island Sound. Glass breaks, love hurts, and families make their own rules. Ultimately, it falls to their grandson, Will, to solve the emotional puzzle of his family and of his own identity.

This story held my interest all the way through. Although it was only 7 hours it seemed longer. It was very well produced. Mare Winningham was an excellent narrator. The story was different, not run of the mill. I like stories that are not a dime a dozen. Also, it doesn't have "filler". The author has a story to tell and she tells it. She's not just trying to fill space just because she can. If anything she perhaps had a little trouble letting go of the story... but telling a story is such a creative process. It's all subjective.

Interesting story. Mare is a very good narrator.

I have read most of Alice Hoffman’s books. I saw this and was surprised I hadn’t read it. But I am so glad that I discovered it with Mare Winninghams beautiful and haunting reading. A lovely poignant story that I will remember for a long time.

Simply hauntingly beautiful.

I purchased this audio book many years ago. Just now listened and love it! Such heart and amazing narrative layers and depth to the characters. The narrator added to the understanding. Such a gem.

Fantastic! What laters!

I have read and/or listened to several books by Alice Hoffman and usually love her imagery and prose. this one was a miss for me. it jumps from events in a choppy, disjointed way and just introduces characters who act like they already know each other. It's missing the development that her novels usually have.

tells, doesn't show

I really enjoyed this book - but I am an Alice Hoffman fan. Her blending of what is real and what just might be real is interesting and convincing. Then narration was great – calming, soothing and so appropriate for this novel. This is definitely a good read (or listen).

I really enjoyed this book
