From Tiffanie DeBartolo, author of God Shaped Hole, How to Kill a Rock Star, and Grace: The Jeff Buckley Story, comes Sorrow, a poignant story about friendship and love, art and music, and how these pursuits can save us from ourselves.

Joe Harper has backpedaled throughout his life. A once-promising guitar prodigy, he's been living without direction since abandoning his musical dreams. Now into his 30s, having retreated from every opportunity he's had to level up, he has lost his family, his best friend, and his own self-respect.

But Joe finds an unlikely path to redemption when he starts working as a carpenter for the bohemian conceptual artist October Danko. The job returns him to his hometown, loaded with bittersweet reminders of his former life, in the shadows of his beloved redwood trees. As Joe's relationship with October develops, he yearns to take a daring step toward a bold future, but struggles to escape the craven decisions of his past.

Another five stars read by this exceptional writer. I read 'Sorrow' twice to make sure I heard what deserved telling, and I listened to it once to make sure I didn't miss anything about this unpredictable, purposeful, and moving story. When you're close to the story's end, one you dread, until you close its cover, then there is an instant feeling of completion. Finn.

Tiffanie is a sensitive writer and I'm guessing an equally emotional, sentimental, maybe an empathetic person in real life too. Because you can't be an artiste and not be keen observant of peoples. And you can't be observant merely, you have to be involved or invested in some way.
Her stories are insightful, they capture human fraility and fragility so astutely, making it a delightful change in an ocean of formulaic stories.
I'm her huge fan, having read all her books. But this tale is as lofty as Redwoods and also wise and sensible

"Everyone is just one decision away from a completely different life"

This line alone deserves a sky full of Stars.
Joe Harper is unfortunate soul who lost a lot during his formative years and that has shrunk his personality to where it folds unto itself in a ball. he's full of insecurities, underconfidence and doubts. Living in a vaccum, just drifting and breathing merely to be alive.
Working with October Danko stirs up a tiny Ember of life in him and his psyche awakens from hibernation. Something stirs inside him enough to explore, but his usual uncertainties and self deprecation destroy his only two remaining and important relations in his life
He's a self saboteur.

"Can courage be learned? And is it ever too late to follow your heart?"

Tiffanie does its so deftly and poetically that it went by too fast. I loved every inch, every syllable of this heart stirring tale of self harming lover who doesn't believe in himself till his Muse opens his eyes
5 stars for redwoods and joshua
