In Victorian England, a divisive election is fast approaching. Passions are so enflamed that Thomas Pitt, shrewd mainstay of the London police, has been ordered not to solve a crime but to prevent a national disaster. The aristocratic Tory candidate—and Pitt’s archenemy—is Charles Voisey. The Liberal candidate is Aubrey Serracold, whose wife’s dalliance with spiritualism threatens his chances.

Indeed, she is one of the participants in a late-night séance that becomes the swan song of a stylish clairvoyant who is found brutally murdered the next morning in her house on Southampton Row. Meanwhile, Pitt’s wife, Charlotte, and their children are enjoying a country vacation—unaware that they, too, are deeply endangered by the same fanatical forces hovering over the steadfast Pitt.

“Fast moving and utterly engrossing … Perry’s Victorian novels attain the societal sweep of Trollope or Thackeray; she has absolute command over both political history and the small fascinating details of everyday life.”—Booklist, starred review

Davina Porter cannot be beaten when narrating the Thomas Pitt books. The realistic part of me accepts change is sometimes needed but I am having to relearn/reimagine my characters who are not what they used to be. An excellent story that is rich in accurate historical details. The Pitt family are friends I enjoy keeping up with.

I hate when narrators are changed.

I am almost finished with the Pitt series and I feel like I travel back with each one !

I had to stop after about an hour. I kept trying but the narration was bothersome. The narrator sounded pretentious. I loved the books narrated by Davina Porter and I liked the ones narrated by Jenny Sterlin almost as much. But I’ll have to skip the ones narrated by Amy Scanlon (four in the Pitt series).

Listener/readers of this series will be aware that something is seriously wrong from the very first sentences of this novel. William Pitt’s situation is very different from the ending of the last book, Half Moon Street. Moreover, this change is not new.

That is because AUDIBLE is MISSING ( in the US) a critical installment of this series, THE WHITECHAPEL CONSPIRACY. Usually Audible lists all books in a series and indicates if a part of the series is not available as a recorded book. But they don’t do that in this case and it’s major SPOILER if you start this book without reading THE WHITECHAPEL CONSPIRACY in another format first.
