Archaeologist Saul Lazenby has been all but unemployable since his disgrace during the War. Now he scrapes a living working for a rich eccentric who believes in magic. Saul knows it's a lot of nonsense...except that he begins to find himself in increasingly strange and frightening situations. And at every turn he runs into the sardonic, mysterious Randolph Glyde.
Randolph is the last of an ancient line of arcanists, commanding deep secrets and extraordinary powers as he struggles to fulfill his family duties in a war-torn world. He knows there's something odd going on with the haunted-looking man who keeps turning up in all the wrong places. The only question for Randolph is whether Saul is victim or villain.
Saul hasn't trusted anyone in a long time. But as the supernatural threat grows, along with the desire between them, he'll need to believe in evasive, enraging, devastatingly attractive Randolph. Because he may be the only man who can save Saul's life - or his soul.

I've heard this story long ago, for free, on youTube. I didn't know about the secret casebook of simon feximal then, and I still liked it enough to have wanted a few more stories in the series.
now, the secret casebook is the pride and joy of my library, and I still think this is not only the very best sequel, but a damned good book in itself! I wonder why she gave up the series.
the references to the prequel are natural for the conversation, and so seamlessly inserted, that at first you don't notice.
the characters are always, complex and likeable, fantastic and relatable.
the story line is a bit too convoluted to be easily understood, but it's not a real detriment - it just makes the story a bit intense.
the writing is first grade, enjoyable and really flowing.
the narration is a bit ...unusual. the voices seem a bit too camp, too vaudeville childish. but the narration is professional, the intonation perfect, the difference between characters unmistakable.
not only a sure thing for the favorites list, but right at the top, with it's prequel <3
this is how sequels are done
