Jacklyn Malus has always known a life of hardship. At the age of four, she lost her mother to the birth of her little sister. At five, it was her grandmother. And now, on her 12th birthday, it’s her father.

Three newly orphaned children set to inherit a generations-old family farm have one place left to turn until they’re old enough to legally own the land: their maternal grandfather, Henry Orbis. From being little more than a specter at the edge of their lives, Henry becomes the center of their worlds, with more than enough baggage for the four of them.

Amidst strained relations of a new life found at the old man’s pear orchard in Downbeat, Jacklyn is dragged from normal family issues to stranger problems more alien than anything she’s used to. However, just like Pa always said, she has to be the one with the strength to carry on. Because if not her, who will?
