"If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment." (Marcus Aurelius, Meditations)

If you're into self-help and personal development, you've most likely come across the terms stoicism and stoic philosophy a lot these days. Unlike a fancy-sounding pop psychology trend or personal development quick fix, stoicism is a powerful ancient Greek philosophy concept.

It was first introduced by Greek philosopher Zeno of Citium (as far back as 300 BC) as a modification of cynicism which talks about self-control, restraint, and fortitude for combating destructive/harmful emotions. Stoicism in principle doesn't call for completely demolishing emotions, but restructuring them through asceticism (abstinence from pleasures of the world) which eventually leads the individual to attain clearer judgment, a strong sense of inner calmness and liberation from suffering/misery. The ultimate goal of stoicism is freeing your life from suffering.

That is what is book is all about.

In book one of this two-part series you will learn all things regarding stoicism, including:

  • Philosophy of the mind
  • Pneuma and scala naturae
  • Stoicism and the soul
  • Stoic logic and the mind
  • Stoicism vs. Epicureanism
  • Stoicism and cynicism
  • The history of stoicism
  • The essential ethics of stoicism
  • How you can apply stoic philosophy to your life
  • And much more!

"You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength. Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself." (Meditations)

Mark Pentazitz’s "Stoic Philosophy" provides a straightforward introduction to the core teachings of Stoicism, from Zeno to Marcus Aurelius. It explains key virtues, practices such as negative visualization, and clarifies common misconceptions about Stoicism, including the notion that it is emotionless or fatalistic. The book is concise and accessible, making it a solid entry point for readers curious about applying ancient wisdom to modern challenges. While it lacks the depth of primary sources, it succeeds as a practical overview.
