There are millions of people in the United States who have no legal right to be here. That creates a problem for them and for the rest of us. They live in the shadows, often looking over their shoulder, gripped with the fear of deportation, and exploited because of their vulnerability. Often, they have to put up with horrible living and working conditions because they have no legal remedy. That is no way to live life. Their presence in the United States also hurts the rest of us – the vast majority of those physically present in the United States, who were born here or otherwise have a legal right to be here. In many cases and for many reasons, a porous system through which millions enter our society without invitation at times poses a threat to our physical, financial, and aesthetic well-being. That is no way to live life either. That, then, is the immigration problem – for them and for us. There are two extreme solutions: deport everyone, or establish open borders so that anyone can come on in. Neither of those makes any practical sense. A third option is to do nothing, and thereby continue to allow the problem to mount and worsen. This book provides a solution to the problem. It begins with realizing the difference between an immigrant and a PHI (Person Here Illegally). Understanding that difference is the first step toward helping them as well as ourselves.
