We live in a 24/7 culture of endless productivity, workaholism, distraction, burnout, and anxiety-a way of life to which we've sadly grown accustomed. This tired system of "life" ultimately destroys our souls, our bodies, our relationships, our society, and the rest of God's creation. The whole world grows exhausted because humanity has forgotten to enter into God's rest.

This book pioneers a creative path to an alternative way of existing. Combining creative storytelling, pastoral sensitivity, practical insight, and relevant academic research, Subversive Sabbath offers a unique invitation to personal Sabbath-keeping that leads to fuller and more joyful lives. A. J. Swoboda demonstrates that Sabbath is both a spiritual discipline and a form of social justice, connects Sabbath-keeping to local communities, and explains how God may actually do more when we do less. He shows that the biblical practice of Sabbath-keeping is God's plan for the restoration and healing of all creation. The book includes a foreword by Matthew Sleeth.

This book has been so impactful. It has brought such a new light to Sabbath keeping. I highly recommend it for those who are ready to keep this forgotten Commandment.

this author makes a well rounded argument and displays the cultural history of Sabbath throughout history. He also makes the practice accessible for both individuals and leaders.

Super informative & gave me quite a lot to think about. My husband & I are currently trying to figure out what Sabbath means for us as a family. Didn’t agree with everything in this book, but there were a lot of good points that I’d never thought about before. Definitely recommend this book!

Timely

This is a very important read for anyone seeking the deep restoration that comes with holy rest. Sabbath is such a healing discipline, a gracious gift of Gos to the world, and yet we’re often like those invited to the banquet who’d rather make excuses than attend.
While written from a more evangelical and conservative perspective than my own tradition (one or two places of disagreement doesn’t overly detract from the whole), I nonetheless found a lot of very valuable reflections on Sabbath, its potential benefit for individuals, the Church and the world. I recommend this book!

For the Weary (and isn’t everyone?)
