Closing the gold window had been imminent since the London Gold Pool was disbanded in 1968 in response to the U.S. overseas military spending that had pushed the balance of payments into steadily deepening deficit since the Korean War (1950-51).

Fantastic

I had read the first half of the second edition, and found it a little difficult. A couple years later, listening to it, it made much more sense. I understood it more as a narrative, and see Michael Hudson as one of America's best historians. This, along with America's Protectionist Takeoff, which I'm reading right now, would seem to cover pretty much the entire history of the United States. I'm very glad for the audiobook.
