Reggie Orrick is a talented English magus and Philosophical Archeologist tasked with a unique mission—to hatch a long-lost dragon egg. He never expected his life to be upended by Ian "Kelp" McGinty, an Unfortunate with no magical abilities but an uncanny knack for guiding Reggie right where he needs to go. Their connection deepens as they face spectral encounters and dangerous adversaries, all while safeguarding a rare dragon and uncovering the hidden truths of the magus world. But just as they find their footing together, Kelp's sudden disappearance leaves Reggie questioning everything.
Reunited and faced with family tragedies, curses, and political intrigue, Reggie and Kelp's bond is tested like never before. From the Irish countryside to the halls of power in the magus community, their love and loyalty are put to the ultimate test. With the stakes rising, the two must confront not only enemies at their doorstep but also the internal doubts that threaten to tear them apart.
"Surprised At Nothing: A Reggie/Kelp Trilogy" is a story of love, loss, and courage set against a backdrop of magical realism and deep emotional stakes.

The book has a wonderful pace that kept me intrigued from the very start to its completion. I do love a wonderfully written fantasy book about two men, with a great cast of supporting characters.

Raven’s performance beautifully complements Lee’s intricate character work and sumptuous wordcraft. Her worldbuilding blends magical lore with everyday life so seamlessly that the setting feels both fantastical and lived-in. Hearing her words interpreted through Raven’s voice deepened my connection to the characters even more than when I first read the print edition.
The trilogy’s three stories follow Reggie, a magus Philosophical Archaeologist, and Kelp, a charming “unfortunate,” as their bond grows through a series of adventures involving dragon eggs, decoding and untangling ancient spellwork, spectral mishaps, and a dangerous rescue mission involving mercurial vixens. Each story expands their world, their relationship, and the mysteries surrounding them, all while maintaining Lee’s signature wordcraft, an effortless blend of heart, humor, introspection, and intrigue.
For fans of immersive magical fantasy — especially those who enjoy M/M romance, rich dialogue, and a touch of mystery — this audiobook is a gem. While I highly recommend reading Lee’s print version, Raven’s inspired performance adds a new dimension to her sumptuous storytelling. Perfect for a long drive… though you may find yourself sitting in the car long after you’ve arrived, unwilling to hit pause.
