Noah Hickman’s murder is on the mind of Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Hart. At his undercover gold panning claim in Mormon Basin, he is freezing. And thinking about his search for evidence – proof – that Dottie and Billy were responsible for the killing. Noah’s old friend Ten Crows (now “Otter” in his freedom) had shared his vision of the killers – perfectly describing the couple – but justice requires more.
Other killings in Mormon Basin, spur deeper investigation into the affairs of Dottie and Billy and their bar, boarding house, and prostitution operation. The sheriff of Baker City has sent for any information about the couple’s history in Louisiana. The investigation quietly continues.
The Hickmans carry on as best they can with ranching their cattle and highly prized Cayuse horses. Each member of the family carries a share of the load, while working toward his or her future. Otter enjoys his freedom and family but is increasingly frustrated over the slow pace of “white man’s justice.”
As Hart finally grows closer to the evidence he needs, he is called back to Portland on urgent business with the U.S. Marshal Service. The sheriff gets an answer from New Orleans and begins forming a posse as Billy and Dottie prepare to leave the country.
