>Inspired by the book Aircraft and Submarines by Willis J. Abbot, 1918, but with 100 additional illustrations, biographies and detailed historical context <. When this book was published in 1918 as AIRPLANES AND SUBMARINES it did not answer very many questions about airplanes and submarines as the GREAT WAR was still going on and the author was reluctant to publish unknown or unsubstantiated facts. Since then we have a wealth more of photographs and information about these new war machines. Also, the photographs the author did use were often misplace from their intended subject as they often only appeared at the beginning of a chapter and not within the context of the chapter, as was the norm for the printing at that time. For this reason the book failed to impress the reviewers of the time. It was for these reasons that I wanted to republish the book with additional photographs from that era and more information that became available, (now public domain). This is the story of the invention, development and uses of the airplane, dirigible and submarines in World War One, what many were calling “those infernal machines and their fearless crews.” With color plates and hundreds of illustrations, it takes you into the first submarines, airplanes and the dirigibles, those infernal machines.
