M. R. James was one of the finest English-language ghostwriters ever published. These short stories are not only classics of their genre, but are outstanding examples of beautifully paced, understated terror and sociological horror, reaching to the dark expanse of the unconscious mind.

Volume Three of Tales of the Supernatural features the stories "Oh Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad", "A School Story", "The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral", and "The Mezzotint".

Good overall collection of James' writings. The weak link for me is an annoyingly effete reading of OH, WHISTLE. If you specifically want this, there are various, better readings out there. I suggest David Suchet's.

What made the experience of listening to Tales from the Supernatural the most enjoyable?

These are, for me, some of the very best supernatural stories in the English language; the narrations are the icing on a most excellent cake...

What did you like best about this story?

The narrations are excellent; I've said as much. What makes them even more enjoyable is that they're read at the correct speed.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I don't dissect 'em "ad nauseum"...I merely read, enjoy, and occasionally comment on 'em...

If you could take any character from Tales from the Supernatural out to dinner, who would it be and why?

the hapless purchaser of "The Mezzotint"

Any additional comments?

nope.

superlative performances!
