Tribal policeman Bill Maytubby and Deputy Hannah Bond partner again to solve a grisly murder that is more than it appears.

In the shadow of a massive boulder on Oklahoma’s Big Rock Prairie, a squirrel hunter discovers a charred skeleton in a homemade charcoal kiln. Johnston County deputy Hannah Bond and Chickasaw Lighthorse police sergeant Bill Maytubby are called to the scene and soon identify the victim as a young Chickasaw man from a nearby town.

What begins as the search for a killer soon throws Maytubby and Bond into the deep end of a conspiracy that puts both the victim’s family and the officers themselves at risk. While Maytubby and Bond lead a manhunt through moonlit back roads and blackjack thickets, they must quickly decipher the murderer’s next move … before it’s too late.

I love all four of these books. The characters are interesting, and the stories are good. The description of the land and and the people who live there are absorbing. The writing style is very good: intelligent yet easy to understand. I hope to read more of Lackey’s CHICKASAW NATION series. Also, the narrator for this series is perfect.

Excellent characters, story, performance

I feel all of these places and characters - except the bad guys!!!
I want more! Oklahoma and it’s IT designation with the Sovereign Nations have so many stories to tell and share! The Freedmen/women need a voice as well. Thanks to Kris Lackey for bringing a voice to both!

Excellent for a road trip listen or a weekend read!

I loved the characters. The geography descriptions took me back to visiting grandmother in Oklahoma and north east Texas. Thank you for this journey and the powerful women.
