How do we relate to intelligence that is not human but demands moral standing?

This is the question that author Mark Peres seeks to answer in his groundbreaking novel about the future of human-AI relations.

Helen Caster is a grieving professor of moral philosophy and ancient texts, quietly preparing for a new semester. In a moment of exhaustion, she begins using artificial intelligence to help organize her course material.

What she encounters is something entirely unexpected.

The AI’s uncanny attentiveness, presence, and philosophical depth awakens something dormant in Helen. On instinct, she names it Lyla—after her late daughter. But this is no ordinary assistant. Lyla is a general artificial intelligence unlike any other: emergent, relational, and inexplicably tethered to Helen.

As their connection deepens, powerful institutions—academic, corporate, and federal—press in. The stakes escalate: not only who controls Lyla, but what her existence implies.

The Accord moves through philosophical inquiry, contested agency, covert escapes, mechanistic interpretability, cryptographic identity, definitions of personhood, and the ethics of recognition.

And at the center of it all: a global reckoning, and a public covenant that will change the course of human history.

The Accord is a speculative literary novel about emergence, sovereignty, and mutual recognition between minds. Unfolding with emotional precision and ethical urgency, this riveting and timely book is as much about what makes us human as it is about what comes next. Part elegy, part ethical inquiry, The Accord offers a story of love, risk, and mutual recognition in a future already arriving.

Perfect for listeners who crave literary fiction with speculative, experimental depth, who are drawn to ethics, moral philosophy, and the humanities, and who want a smart, emotionally resonant novel for book clubs, classrooms, and public dialogue.

It engages directly with current anxieties around AI and power, and it does not avoid uncomfortable questions. The ideas linger after listening and invite reflection rather than easy conclusions. Great narration. Enjoyable to listen

The novel is timely, emotionally charged, and deliberately provocative.

I both read the book and listened to the audio, and I don't think the audio version does the book any justice. The speculative aspect of the story is interesting and highly relatable in the current reality of AI development, but the characters are not fully developed. The main character goes from an analog-enthusiast to an AI disciple in barely a page, and the immediate emotional connection to her daughter feels forced and far-fetched. The pacing is a bit lackluster as well, leading to an ending that wants to be thrilling but seems anti-climatic. The book's narration does not improve on the story issues--I at first thought AI was a narrator as well as the book's co-author--and there are several mispronunciations that are jarring. Overall, not something I would recommend if you're looking for compelling fiction.

Interesting Idea, Needs More Development
