Daen Athnael is the third son of a minor Eorl and only one of many Senior Sergeants in the mercenary company, The Iron Fist. He is no one of note in Aralon really, until the day he is selected by High Lord of the Staffclave Melaenai d’Rann to escort Adept Kyrae Asenath on a secret mission.

Despite cryptic warnings that all of Aralon would be in danger if he should fail, Daen hardly expects serious trouble. Though young, he is one of the best swordsmen in the Iron Fist. Which means he is one of the best in Aralon. Other than being turned into a slug by the temperamental Adept, the only trouble he would likely have to deal with would be discouraging drunken, tavern patron’s from troubling the beautiful Kyrae when they stop to rest at Inns as they traveled down the Great South Road. What could possibly go wrong?

Everything, as it turns out. Along with being one of the best swordsmen in Aralon, Daen Athnael has the uncanny ability of finding himself in the right place at exactly the wrong time. Adept Kyrae’s mission is not as secret as the High Lord had hoped and evil forces of the Sa’tan will do everything in their power to see Daen and Kyrae fail and Aralon fall to darkness.


The Adept and the Iron Fist takes place almost a thousand years before events recorded in “Whisper of Blood.” The first book of The Stones of Heaven trilogy.
