Well known as a "children's book," The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is rich in eloquent and sophisticated language, and filled with realistic characters who become locked in life and death struggles. There is a murder, stolen treasure, and death by starvation. Add a love story, a buddy story, and a family drama, presented "with a fidelity to circumstance which loses no charm by being realistic in the highest degree, and which gives incomparably the best picture of life in that region as yet known to fiction," as William Dean Howells wrote of Tom Sawyer, in Harper's Magazine in 1876.Public Domain (P)2009 Richard Henzel Literature & Fiction

Editorial reviews

Richard Henzel, who has toured his "Mark Twain in Person" throughout the United States and overseas, brings dramatic touches of humor, mystery, and excitement to his performance of Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. This American classic highlights mid-19th century life along the Mississippi as lived by the mischievous and charming Tom, his friend Huck Finn, and his love, Becky Thatcher. Twain’s novel has engaged audiences for generations, whether his “hero” is hoodwinking schoolmates into serving his punishment, pursuing murderers, fleeing life with sweet Aunt Polly, attending his own funeral, or digging up buried gold. This performance is guaranteed to continue that tradition.
