This is Irving Stone's powerful and passionate biographical novel of Michelangelo. His time: the turbulent Renaissance, the years of poisoning princes, warring popes, the all-powerful Medici family, the fanatic monk Savonarola. His loves: the frail and lovely daughter of Lorenzo de Medici; the ardent mistress of Marco Aldovrandi; and his last love--his greatest love--the beautiful, unhappy Vittoria Colonna. His genius: a God-driven fury from which he wrested the greatest art the world has ever known. Michelangelo Buonarotti, creator of "David", painter of the Sistine ceiling, architect of the dome of St Peter's, lives once more in Irving Stone's marvellous book. What did you love best about The Agony and the Ecstasy?

I was not aware of the body of work that he had. Very impressive. The history of the period added a great deal to the story as well.

I did not like hearing Michelangelo voiced as a whiney individual without a will motivation.

Who was the most memorable character of The Agony and the Ecstasy and why?

Great performance by the narrator. The book takes you in a realistic journey of what Michelangelo's daily life may have been. You end up believing you were there with him through his struggles and triumphs, and ultimately by his side on his deathbed.

Brilliant as the Master himself

Don't view any piece created by Michelangelo before reading this book. A new vision and understanding will accompany your experience the next time you view a Michelangelo sculpture, painting, or building.
