In the 1880's, an American senator observes, with some perplexity, English country life and all of its social echelons. To add some spice along the way, we follow the romances and intrigues of the flirtatious Arabella Trefoil.

The story isn't terribly compelling, though I've wonders if Trollope was expressing his ideas about British politics through the mouth of the senator. The narrator also didn't do too much for me. Timothy West's narrations of Trollope are far superior.

Not my favorite Trollope

Some people criticize the narrator, but i think she is great. Perhaps at beginning, you may not get used to her narration, more you listen, more you realize how good it is.

Enjoy it very much

I’ve read most of Anthony Trollope’s works but had missed this one until now. It contains everything I love about him as a writer. Great character arcs, sympathetic characters (especially women), a great window into the mid to late 19th c. I hadn’t really liked this narrator in the past but I grew to love her by the end!

Loved it

It took me a while to unravel the plots. The bold maiden out for not love but a rich husband, the modest maiden who rejects riches in favor of a man she loves. Those are the two heroines. In the background are the culture , the regional economy, and the dealings of the church men over which the American Senator is the self- appointed critic. Three main plots.

Two more in this series and I think each one is best. Trollope makes each character real and takes the reader to the 1800's, my favorite era!
