When Jill becomes both pregnant and single at the end of one spring semester, she and her two closest friends plunge into an experiment in tri-parenting, tri-schooling, and tri-habitating as grad students in Seattle. Naturally, everything goes wrong - but in ways no one sees coming.

Janey Duncan narrates the adventure of this modern family with hilarity and wisdom and shows how three lives are forever changed by (un)cooperative parenting, literature, and a tiny baby named Atlas who upends and uplifts their entire world. In this sparkling and wise debut novel, Frankel's unforgettable heroines prove that home is simply where the love is.

Critic reviews

"Beautifully written, a highly literate story of friendship, parenthood, and every other kind of love you can imagine." (Marisa de los Santos, author of Love Walked In)

Loved the story but not my favorite Laurie Frankel book. Well written, relatable characters but I find it a little slow at times.

Fun & well written

Liked the character development and the strong bonds of friendship. The tragedies become opportunities for healing and growth in every person in the story.

I listened to this book after coming across Laurie Frankel’s This is How it Always Is, which I loved. Atlas of Love had her strong writing, but the story, while original and refreshing, didn’t captivate me as much. I did truly appreciate a novel taking on the complexities and depths of female friendships. Jane, the main character is very likeable, but I found her willingness and availability for her friends grating and a bit naive. I also had a very hard time with Jill. I didn’t understand why she had gained such loyal friends given that she is generally a pill. I listened to both books on Audible. I have to say that this narrator wasn’t my favorite. She doesn’t have a monotone voice, but she almost sounds like a soothing AI voice and her inflections became very predictable.

This book is sweet and cheesy, like a holiday movie, and I liked it because that’s what I was in the mood for. It’s only half as good as This Is How It Always Is, which I loved. The narrator amplifies the cheesiness with her reading style, unfortunately.
