The precise meaning or origin of this term remains a subject of intense debate among historians; some theorize it was an Old French corruption or misinterpretation of "Muhammad," the prophet of Islam, while others suggest it held esoteric or Gnostic meanings known only to high-ranking members of the Order, if it existed at all.
