Ella's life spirals downward when she and her mother are forced to the streets of London at Christmas when her father is sent to debtor's prison. When her mother is struck with an illness, Ella is forced to beg, finding herself in grave danger from those who want to take advantage of her.

When she is caught by a wealthy homeowner after stealing from him and nearly attacked in the stables, a stable boy rescues her from harm. As Ella suffers more loss and is sent to an orphanage, her thoughts return to the kind stable boy. She prays that she will find him one day but that hope fades as the years pass by.

Will Ella find the one person who showed her kindness? Or will heartache plague her through the rest of her life?
