This book is addressed directly to women experiencing domestic abuse, and to those who seek to support them, including pastoral leaders, friends, and support organizations. It debunks the myths—perpetuated by some abusers and, unwittingly, by many churches—which prevent women from getting out of harm’s way. It helps them realize that the Bible does not belong to their abuser but is a text of liberation. Written with careful attention to pastoral issues, it closely examines and clearly explains the relevant scriptural texts.

It´s an embarrassment to the Kingdom how often the Scriptures are twisted to condone, even foment violence and other types of abuse in marriage, and worse yet, from the pulpit. Dr. Paynter's excellent and careful work has done the Kingdom a great service and is a much-needed corrective to the prevalent bad theology circulating in so many churches which lends itself to many pastors acting out the exact opposite of God's will for His people. This should be required reading for anyone in pastoral ministry as well as those involved in theological education.

A must read for every church
