A dragon is on the loose, a monster of untold power, and no one can say for certain where it's headed. All that's known is what it wants: the magical artefacts called Petrified Eggs.

Durren Flintrand and his friends have been tasked with locating the remaining two, which involves partnering once more with arrogant wizardry student Luccenna Fia-Arcwright. Even so, after their recent tribulations, a research trip to Durren's home town of Luntharbor sounds almost like a holiday.

Yet before they can get there, a stopover in the capital becomes an unexpected nightmare, as they find themselves caught in a conflict ancient as the city itself. Beset by enemies old and new, forced to take increasingly desperate measures, and hurled by malfunctioning magic to places they couldn't have imagined, our young adventurers have never been in more danger. They've survived their share of quests, but what can five students do when the entire world is under threat and everything they've learned to rely on is gone?

One thing's for sure: if they ever intend to graduate from the Black River Academy, they're going to have to save it first - and that means not dying along the way!
