The old Apache renegade Soldado Viejo is hiding out in Mexico, and the Arizona Department Adjutant has selected two men to hunt him down. One -- Dave Flynn -- knows war, the land, and the nature of his prey. The other is a kid lieutenant named Bowers. But there's a different kind of war happening in Soyopa. And if Flynn and his young associate choose the wrong allies -- and the wrong enemy -- they won't be getting out alive.

This was a bit different version of old theme of Army vs Indians only this time the army is two men sent into Mexico to bring back the Warm Spring Apache. The men find a wagon of local villagers killed by local scalp hunters and make friends of local villagers. Some nail biting excitement with a fast pace story. A nice change of pace story, it is great to read a western now and then..

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It might have been a lot better but the narrator whispered the whole thing. There was no reason to unless that's his style but for me it was a struggle to get through.

Would you be willing to try another one of Josh Clark’s performances?

no!

Might have been good if

Is it trope writing if you codified the trope? Characters were easier to distinguish if I replaced their names with titles, "brooding loner", "grizzled mentor", and "green recruit" versus "lazy drunken Mexican", "noble savage freedom fighter" and "evil bureaucrat", women's value is determined by their "purity", pistol duels and being saved by the cavalry. I didn't hate it.

A fair Elmore Leonard story. The whispering narrator trying to sound menacing was not helpful.
