National Book Award Winner Paul Fussell tells the breathtaking story of WWII from the young soldiers' points of view. WWII was not the glorified picture it is often depicted to be. For the American soldier it was a tiring, emotional, and gruesome experience. Fussell's extensive details and insight help to make this story come alive.©2003 Paul Fussell (P)2003 Recorded Books, LLC World War II 20th Century Wars & Conflicts Military Modern War Military & War Biographies & Memoirs Imperialism Middle Ages

The book is very good. This isn't a history of WW2 per se, but more a correction of American misconceptions & myths of the war. One problem was the narrator. The narrator was fine but he was too closely mic & you can hear every swallow & so on which is distracting.

Eye opening about WW2 in Europe

An excellent account of America's role in Europe during World War II, much of it based on the author's own experience as an infantryman. If your understanding of World War II comes from watching movies, this is a must read book.

A great book that I found to be developmental and maturative for a young man coming of age such as myself. I found great relation with the protagonist and I further found this book to be highly intelligent. I further highly recommend this book.

A wonderful book

If you have read Stephen A.'s books on WWII, you will find nothing new here.

Some old, same old

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

A cynical and bitter story of American soldiers in the European theater in 1944-45 by a writer who apparently served honorably and earned medals for his service. Perhaps he never got over his feelings of fear and danger but this story is a shallow effort at best and marred by a supercilious narrator. Buy the book in paperback if you need toilet paper.
