What do we mean by mental development? By mental development we do not mean only those brief periods of our lives which we spend sitting cross-legged, counting our breath or looking at an image or reciting a formula. By mental development, we mean all those techniques or methods whereby we can change our mental orientation whereby we can change the way in which we view ourselves and the world around us.

In this tradition, we are concerned with demonstrating the integration, the union between meditation, and our daily experience. In a sense, we are going to try to make our daily experience part of our meditation, and we are going to try to make our meditation part of our daily experience. This book explains how we can develop our mind in order to improve and transform the nature and quality of our life within the framework of the Buddhist tradition.

Whether you’re new to Buddhism or have a long meditation history, this book offers a framework for integrating contemplative awareness into everyday life. I found myself pausing often, reflecting on how even subtle shifts in attention and attitude can reshape how I respond to stress, relationship dynamics, and inner chatter.

Highlights for me included:
• A clear definition of mental development that goes beyond posture and breath to include mental orientation itself.
• Approachable teachings that make ancient contemplative practices feel alive and relevant today.
• Insights that are not just intellectually enriching, but genuinely useful for inner transformation.

Highly recommended if you want a balanced, authentic, and practice-rooted introduction to the Buddhist approach to mind training. This one will stay in my library for repeat listening.
