David Miracle loves New York for all its eccentricities, as they provide him with myriad opportunities to ply his trade. Driven by natural curiosity, optimism, and a strongly developed sense of intuition, Miracle has dedicated his life to solving obscure and sometimes seemingly senseless crimes.

Then a famed monument vanishes in the night, leaving no clear traces behind. Perpetually surly Inspector Rowell, who has no time for amateur sleuths, reluctantly calls Miracle in. Facing considerable pressure from 'the higher ups,' Rowell decides that Miracle is the lesser of to evils.

And he has good reason for this. It seems that the disappearance is only the preface to a more serious crime, and the city is to be held to ransom.
