Perennial questions about leadership are “Is leadership caught or is it taught?” Are persons born to be leaders or are leaders more a product of their environment and the influences that develop them? This volume is rooted in the premise of my observations and findings over 40 years as a practitioner, student, researcher, and leadership teacher that one characteristic/factor distinguishes leaders of thriving, vital, and growing teams and organizations from those that are less effective, and not thriving and growing. This characteristic/factor is what I will discuss throughout this volume—the catalytic leader. Catalytic leaders have transformational and servant leadership qualities and are passionate about developing emerging leaders because they understand the leadership principle of multiplication—that effective leaders develop effective leaders.
