Recruited by the nearby private school even as he and his folks face eviction, Copeland is doing his damnedest to do right by himself, for himself. And yet the forces at play entrap him in a reality that chews up his past and obscures his future. Copeland’s wry awareness of the absurd keeps life passable, as do his friends and their surprising array of survival skills. And yet in the aftermath of a protest rally against police violence, everything changes, and Copeland finds himself caught in the flood of history.

Audible is the way to go

Audible is definitely the way to go with this one! I was given this book as part of a book tour happening over on Instagram. It reminded me of just of Chain Gang All Stars for 2 reasons the speed of the story is a slow build, and it is very dystopian. The audible brought this one to life for me and saved this book from a bad review. All the issues the book addresses are relevant and are ongoing issues in America. The characters each have their own stories but Copelands stand out. Why do these things continue to happen to our black youth today? What do we need to address this? After reading this per usual I’m heartbroken and no real resolve. If you love Chain Gang or Boyz in the Hood, or Dear Martin you are sure to love this one as well.

Exceptional

I loved the voice of Copeland Cane’s character. The writing was spectacular. The character’s voice is witty, lyrical, and employs many metaphors unique to the story. Very impressive. The actor narrating Cope is fantastic. This book was a pleasure to listen to even when the content is upsetting.
