In a world where gods walk alongside mortals, and humanity is cowed into submission by the empire of Alcaron, two brothers find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Taken from their homes and subjected to terrors that would drive any man insane, Serithas and Zolan will have to learn just what it takes to be men, in a world that appears indifferent to their very existence.

Following their journey, our heroes shall find themselves pitted against a slew of unspeakable horrors. All the while they are being pursued by General Caerst, a woman whose reputation and malice knows no bounds.

Nowhere is safe. Instead, both will have to learn the true meaning of strength, resolve, and friendship. They will have to rise to the occasion, when all else would rather have them turning away in fear.

They will have to become STEEL and STORMBRIGHT.

Steel and Stormbright: The Curse of the Star Wraiths is a wonderful journey of simple exposition and dire understanding with the state of Zirvonia and some of its peoples. The rising empire of Ilgrathians demonstrates an antagonist that is straight to the point without need of delving too deep into their political position in the setting. The two brothers are pushed to their limit, from combat to common living, and this creates a well woven narrative with many places to seed new tales, not only from the open ending but also the gaps that lay between major scenes.

This novel is definitely intended for a maturing audience, showing diction choice that reflects coming of age youths and the way they think and while it addresses heavier topics they are only in brief mention, making the story engaging but giving the darker undertones needed to get a good understanding of the world state according to the main characters. There are a handful of moments in the story that felt a little cut and dry, specifically near the endings and beginnings of chapters, but they were quickly followed up with a collection of action or dialogue that fleshed out the scene further and gave way to the natural flow of the story.

This title being the first is a great entry and gateway into the rest of the series and I look forward to reading or listening to the rest!

A young adult fantasy reader's gateway

A solid start to a fantasy series with a very much Robert E. Howard aesthetic going for it. Curse of the Star Wraiths is a book about brotherhood, trials, tribulations, with a bit of a revenge aspect to it. If you like Conan the Barbarian or Solomon Kane, you'll probably like this book. As always, Son of Sonnet does a great job reading through it

Conan with a bit of JRPG
