Set in England at the turn of the 20th century, Wallace's crime novel The Daffodil Mystery follows the mysterious circumstances under which shop owner Lyne has been murdered. Accordingly, it is up to detective Jack Tarling and his trusted Chinese assistant to solve the case and reach an appropriate and just resolution. Moreover, the happenings within the novel are intensified by the colorful set of characters, which are marked by their plausible façade and contribute to the novel's appeal.

Here we have a classic thriller in the vein of Bulldog Drummond. Unlike Drummond, however, Jack Tarling makes more missteps and miscalculations; he’s a shade more human. If it wasn’t for his friend and sidekick, Ling Chu, I doubt this one would ever have been solved.

Nigel Thomas does a fine job serving up all the thrills and spills, though his producer might have caught some awkward moments: “sententiously” becomes “sensious”; “continent”, “contint” – hence the four stars for performance.

A Thrilling Thriller
