~ I was given this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review ~

Very realistic short story about 2 intermediate divers who decide to explore an unmapped caving system... and the gamble they inevitably take for their chance at a little adventure. I'm claustrophobic and have done a little spelunking in my younger years, so that uneasy and slowly tightening feeling of becoming lost or disoriented and being trapped forever definitely resonated with me while I listened* to this. Because this is a short story, there's really no backstory and not a lot of buildup to the climax, but that doesn't spoil the overall read. The takeaway is still a snapshot of human nature and emotion and perhaps even a keen reminder to be smart and to take proper precautions when exploring with friends 🧠

* I listened at 1.5 speed, which was perfect for taking my time to enjoy the story while not feeling like the reader was dragging.

Never going cave diving

For 2 people who checked and double checked everything the one thing I realized they didn’t have was a guide string… I think it was mentioned but was it used? NOPE! I would never go into an unexplored cave without a string to lead me back where I came. Otherwise good story.

Story is inspiring.

I listen this at normal speed. Good story. Well worth the listen while I waited at the airport. I didn’t care for the narrator. I am picky but I thought it did a bad job of portraying the female voice. But I will for sure listen again and again to see where they could have prepared for the challenge. I will follow the author for sure.

These are the choices that weigh upon two experienced divers when they learn of unexplored areas recently discovered near their home. With an over-prepared mindset, and backups of vital equipment, what will this couple find when they ignore the warnings of others and press on to murky depths in search of a new thrill? Short stories can rarely dive to deeply [sorry, couldn't resist] into the character's backstories, or spend much time on world building, but The Dark Descent does a fine job of setting up a locale, introducing us to the players, and taking us on a journey fraught with danger and difficult decisions. Narration was on par with the subject matter and performed appropriately by Daniel Hord. Enjoy this experience, but don't hold your breath for too long. This short story exposes themes of trust, resilience, desire to live, bond between a couple and a zest for life among others.
David and Rachel are cave divers that want to explore one where not everyone comes back. They have to trust each other and stick with the plan.
Released in 2025, this short story is full of suspense and will keep you on the edge if your seat. A little bit more and I can totally see it as a Netflix movie! Thank you for the ARC!
