Amanda Clay enjoys her comfortable London life. Her husband Richard is a loving and successful man, her two teenage boys a handful but easy to love and she has a challenging and worthwhile career. And for emotional support she has the best friend possible. What could possibly go wrong?

But when Richard receives a letter from a DNA tracing company to say that he is the father of a grown-up daughter, her life turns upside down.

She does not trust the accuracy of the results. She does not believe him when he says his daughter is the result of a casual encounter and he has never seen her or her mother since. And when she meets her new step-daughter, someone from a completely different background, she does not like her one little bit.

Things go rapidly downhill as Richard becomes increasingly besotted with the girl. And worst of all, Amanda and the boys begin to take second place.

And then, of course, there is the question of the inheritance.
