In later years, people often asked Hugh Hitchcock about the Canadian River cowboy strike of 1883.

Wagon boss Hugh Hitchcock knows the cowboy life better than most: In 1883, if you’re a cowboy, you can’t own a cow and you are stigmatized as a drunk. Worse, you are exploited by the wealthy cattle owners who fence the range, replace traditions and trust with written rules of employment, refuse to pay a livable wage, and change things “that ought to be left alone”. The cowboys working in the Canadian River country of the Texas Panhandle decide to fight back, to do the unthinkable: Go on strike.

In this celebrated novel, Elmer Kelton uses the true but little-known Canadian River incident to focus on the changes brought to ranching by big-money syndicates.

Performed by Terence Aselford, Bradley Smith, David Coyne, Christopher Graybill, Michael Glenn, Alyssa Wilmoth, Ken Jackson, Joe Brack, Thomas Keegan, Scott McCormick, Thomas Penny, Eric Messner, Danny Gavigan, Patrick Bussink, Tim Carlin, Richard Rohan, James Konicek, Nanette Savard, James Lewis, Christopher Scheeren, Drew Kopas, Michael John Casey, Kimberly Gilbert, Mort Shelby.

This book is about Striking. The cowboys go on strike against the big ranchers. This was a good storyline. Ive never read anything like this. That starts a war. Things like this really did happen back in this era. The difference is back than and now is now there is more laws now. Back then it was more of the six shooter. This book held my interest. I found this to be a wonderful listen. I could have listened to much more of a story along this line. There were parts that literally made me want to cry. And parts that made me feel like I was glad the bad guy got what he deserved. Fantastic book.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a mandatory book for a college history class. It started out as I had to read it, then turned into I can’t quit listening. I’m ready to check out similar books to this. Had a great story plot and kept me interested the whole time.
