Arriving on the windswept Ile de Ré, Tabby Dewhurst is unable to even afford a room for the night. Overhearing a villager repeating the access code to her front door, she lets herself into the house, and so she enters the strange, hidden world of Emmie, whose sudden offer of friendship is at odds with her obsession with privacy.

Tabby begins to form suspicions about Emmie, suspicions that lead her to a scandal with shattering consequences.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a tale of love, the wider consequences of adultery, the depravity of the gutter press and with a jaw dropping twist at the end. Loved it!

Kept me out of trouble

The plot was interesting and unique but the ending left a lot to be desired.
Also, why did Emily’s voice change when her part was being told by Tabby? That was not necessary and a bit confusing.

Story was interesting but ending was meh

The ending felt very rushed. I was disappointed the audio book did not have the updated epilogue that physical book apparently has.

Similar to the many other reviews - the story was interesting until the last hour or so when it went fairly off the rails and then abruptly stopped with no real conclusion or summing up of looose ends. Takes “leave the ending up to your imagination “ to new levels. Overall rather than being a mystery or psychological thriller it was more of a sad story/cautionary tale mixed in with another sad story.

Still waiting for there to be an ending

Loved the twists and turns of plot and the painfully realistic portrayal of the affair and fallout.

Great plot and narration
