In August 1914, renowned explorer Ernest Shackleton and a crew of 27 set sail for the South Atlantic in pursuit of the last unclaimed prize in the history of exploration: the first crossing on foot of the Antarctic continent. They came with in 85 miles of their destination when their ship, Endurance, was trapped fast in the ice pack, and the crew was stranded on the floes. Their ordeal lasted for 20 grueling months, and the group made two near-fatal attempts to escape by open boat before they were finally rescued.

Drawing upon previously unavailable sources, Caroline Alexander gives us a riveting account of Shackleton's expedition. An extraordinary re-creation of the terrible beauty of Antarctica, the awful destruction of the ship, and the crew's heroic daily struggle for survival, The Endurance thrillingly describes one of the last great adventures in the brave age of exploration, perhaps the greatest of them all.

I listened to 'Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage' before listening to this. Both are great, however 'Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage' tells the story in a bit more detail. This book does a better job with the ending and what happens to the voyagers. I recommend them both, however if you can listen to only one, choose Shackleton's Incredible Voyage.

I had read "South" prior to this. Together I feel I have a complete view of there dire situation. Very hard to stop listening, somedays I had to take the "long" way home.

The book starts out somewhat confusing with history facts presented in a confusing manner. Once that format is overcome, the book’s story is EXCELLENT (with a some “typos” & grammar errors not corrected).
The narration does not follow the text many times throughout the book-VERY distracting!
In all, these “technical” issues are annoying; seems as though the book & narration were “rushed” and not carefully edited
