The Ex-Con is the 43rd book I’ve read or listened to by Vincent Zandri. Once again Mr. Zandri’s storytelling kept me fully engaged in an action-packed hardboiled thriller. Along with getting to know a new cast of characters, it was great to have a couple of familiar characters from other books show up to assist in taking care of business.

Jimmy “the Monster” Brandt is one of those characters you can sympathize with for the circumstances that sent him to prison and the circumstances that turned him into The Monster. I’m not sure, but The Ex-con is one of the few books by Vin Zandri that has created the prospect of tears as the story progressed. I’m not sure how he consistently does it, but the way he gets me so invested in his characters is what keeps me coming back to read or listen to more and more of his books.

If you enjoy hard-boiled Noir thrillers, you might give The Ex-Con a shot. If you do choose to give this book a try, you might invest in the audiobook expertly narrated by Daniel Dorse. Once I heard Daniel’s voice, I knew I was in for a real treat. I’ve listened to several of Vin Zandri’s books narrated by Daniel Dorse, and I’ve loved each and every one.
