A sinister darkness has finally cast its long shadow across the world, and Adrian Ring now suspects he's at the center of the maelstrom. And he's not alone. Even overseas, his friend Kevin is somehow standing at his side.

At Auburn Lake, Adrian and his adopted family finally understand that the dreams they have suffered since the end of the world are far more than restless imaginings. When a thousand mindless dead arrive holding books, can it be anything but a message from beyond the grave? Soon they will learn that what the dead say can be far worse than what the dead have done.

In The Failed Coward, the fourth installment in the epic Adrian's Undead Diary series, Adrian realizes the scope of humanity's struggle, and just what's at stake. Despite all the dangers posed by the world around him, Adrian pushes out more aggressively, reclaiming more and more territory from the clutches of the treasonous survivors and the walking dead.

Adrian’s world is also expanded with more short stories. New questions are raised, and new characters introduced. And they will need all the help they can get to stay alive.

In the end, everyone may need Adrian's help.

If you could sum up The Failed Coward in three words, what would they be?

Familiar, heart wrenching, realistic

What did you like best about this story?

I love how quickly I warmed up to the main character. Adrian Ring feels like a friend and that is what puts this series into my top 20. I started reading the first book online and when I couldn't get any further without paying, I turned to audible and found that James Foster put the perfect voice to Adrian Ring. Now an all around perfect package. Can not wait for book 5 to be released.

Which character – as performed by James Foster – was your favorite?

Adrian Ring of course

This is the fourth book in the Adrian's Undead Diary series. You will need to have read the others to enjoy this one. As soon as I finish one book, I immediately want to pick up the next. It is so good. This book has the journal format of the other books as well as vignettes like those featured in the last book. I was initially wary of the journal format, but Philbrook handles this format nicely. This book still has action and survival, but as the series progresses, each book really settles into character and story development. These are not just gory zombie fare.

I have listened to this entire series (more than once). I have loved every book. The story line is great. Each book has small daily plots as well as an overarching plot making each book a complex mixture of ideas and emotions. The character development is fantastic. It is the apocalypse story that has a little something for everyone. Gun porn - check. Tactical discussion - check. Actual daily survival - check. Emotional and personal interactions - check. Zombie killing - check. Funny stuff - check. NotTooOverTheTop spiritual elements - check. you get the idea.

This book and the rest of the series is all good stuff. Seriously.

The narrator is great. Perfect.

Still Hooked

Which scene was your favorite?

Adrian's injury and Abby's taking over as the Scribe

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both

Any additional comments?

If you've gotten this far into the series, you already know it's a great story so I don't really need to try and sell you on it. Great writing and narrating - it's just a fun series, waiting to see what Adrian does next.

This is a transitional book in the series and it also sets up the rest of the books in the series. It might not be the best in the series, but it was still very good and I can't wait to start book 5!
