An immersive account of a seemingly loving father’s transformation into a "family annihilator."

In March 2023, Alex Murdaugh was found guilty of murdering his wife and younger son at Moselle, their home in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. By then, the story had become headline news across the country with its revelations of corruption in high places, massive fraud, opioid abuse, fake suicides, suspicious accidents, and the generational recklessness of the wealthy legal dynasty at its center. Having covered the case for The New Yorker, where his article became the magazine’s most read story of the year, the acclaimed novelist James Lasdun brings his long-standing interest in the darker drives of the human psyche to an investigation into the serial embezzlements, fatal boat crash, and other events leading up to the slaughter at Moselle.

Having traveled extensively in the Lowcountry, Lasdun draws on original interviews (including with Murdaugh’s notorious "Cousin Eddie"), transcripts of phone calls Murdaugh made from prison, the literature of criminal psychology, and the murder trial itself. Deeply researched, sharply written, and with the intensity of a Southern gothic novel, The Family Man constructs a masterful portrait of Murdaugh and the mind-boggling crimes that wreaked havoc on his community.

I followed the entire Murdaugh tornado since the early rumblings. I followed and am still following all the podcasters, facebookers, watched all the documentaries, listened to all the audiobooks (multiple times) and have watched and then rewatched the trial so many times I have many testimonies memorized with the exact cadences. THIS audio book is heads and shoulders above ALL the rest. Full stop.

i have listened to this audiobook 3 full times. Perfect narration. New, added layers of observation of behavior we all saw and heard and because of the sheer magnitude of information, we all kept moving along with the trial as if we were sitting in a train car, trying to comprehend as much as humanly possible. i commend the author for superb word choices!!! So many times I wanted to shout he nailed exactly what we all witnessed or heard!! A perfect example is that disgusting lip smacking AM had a bad habit of doing. ugh

There are so many extra bits of information trial watchers all heard rumors about, like the prostitute that didn't testify, and the reason why she did not!! So many loose ends were tied up and some shocking, jawdropping, repulsive information about Fitsnews?! Still floored over this info and it puts many things into perspective. Yikes.

This is a MUST read or listen and now that Murdaugh was just granted a new trial, I know who to follow for clarity and truth during Murdaugh 2 point 0.

This is a MUST-listen-to audiobook!! Beyond stellar. Far beyond all the rest of the books, podcasts, documentaries! Full stop!

I followed the Murdaugh since 2021. The book is well written and easy to listen to. I was able to understand the timeline better than the other books I have read about Alex Murdaugh and the trial. I appreciated the author digging into the psychological aspects of the case. I have always felt this case is Shakespearean and the author refers to Macbeth! If you want to dig deeper into the Murdaugh case or just want a good true crime mystery, this is a must read for you.

A Murdaugh Must Read

This is a very interesting listen. My only criticism is the pronunciation of Alex. It sounds to me like the the narrator is is pronouncing Alex as El-lic.

An interesting listen
