The past and present collide as five women work to save the summer camp of their youth in this heartwarming novel.

The Firelight Girls is a story of three generations of women and men whose lives are pieced back together when they return to the place that made them who they are, a summer camp on Lake Wenatchee in Washington State. Seventy-year-old Ethel is directionless after losing Haddie, the love of her life, to a heart-attack. Camp was where they met way back in the 50s, and they made their home down the shore from camp. Once a vibrant, capable camp counselor, Shannon has just had her heart shattered by the loss of her job. Ruby, estranged from Ethel for fifty years, has been living with a secret for almost as long. Finally, there is Amber, a homeless teen who has been hiding out in one of the cabins, hoping that no one at school will catch on to her plight. When they learn that the camp’s future is in jeopardy, Ethel and Ruby send out the alarm, reuniting campers and staff to save the place that was so instrumental in all of their lives. A story of enduring friendship and romance, The Firelight Girls is about what has been lost and what can still be created.

This was a perfect book to read on the way home from summer camp- in spite of a somewhat predictable ending, this book is a good reminder that we all have, at times, happy endings in our life.

Great to read

As a former camp girl, this was like listening to a story about me and my group of friends from camp. We have been close for over 30 years and feel the same way about our camp. We sang all of the songs they talked about! It made me happy and teared eyed at the same time.

Every word of this story was like returning to the summer camp of my life. I could change the names of the characters and it could almost be about my Camp Fire camp in Michigan. The playful nature of these ladies when they returned to camp is just how my friends and fellow alumni from a variety of eras from our camp feel at grownup camp weekends. So fun, I'm a happy camper!

Nostalgia in these pages

As someone who attended a summer camp in ID throughout my childhood, I found myself being able to relate to everything in this book. Some of the camp songs they even name in this book were ones that we used to sing at my camp, as well as some of the traditions described. This book was certainly written by someone who knew and loved a summer camp in the PNW.

Great Summer Camp Story
