The Civil War is one of the most well-documented and studied periods in American history, yet despite the volumes written on its causes, battles, and leaders, there remain countless lesser-known stories and intriguing facts that often slip through the cracks. These overlooked moments—small but significant—are what make history so fascinating, revealing the complexities and human experiences that shaped the course of the war. With The Forgotten Pages of The Civil War: 101 Interesting and Lesser Known Facts of The Civil War, my goal is to shine a light on these hidden details, offering a fresh perspective on the conflict that forever altered the United States.

This book is not intended to be an exhaustive account of the war’s grand battles or well-known figures. Instead, it is a collection of the surprising, the strange, and the forgotten—the pieces of history that may have been overshadowed by larger events but are no less important in understanding the Civil War’s full story. From the fascinating individuals who played pivotal roles, to the technological innovations that changed the nature of warfare, to the social and cultural dynamics that influenced life on and off the battlefield, this book explores the lesser-known facets of this defining chapter in American history.

As you listen, you may recognize familiar names or events, but you’ll also encounter stories that provide a deeper understanding of the war’s impact on ordinary people, unexpected moments that shaped its outcome, and how its legacy continues to influence the country today. My hope is that these 101 facts not only engage your curiosity but also encourage you to think about the Civil War in new ways, seeing beyond the dates and names to appreciate the rich, multifaceted history of this era.

I had high hopes for this book. The longer it went, the more disappointing it became. For example, the author points out Sherman's and Sheridan's atrocities against Sourthern civilians, yet he justifies their actions by saying it was necessary and effective. He also failed to mention the thousands of people in the North who were imprisoned for opposing the war. While mentioning POW camps, he fails to mention the higher death rate for Southerners. The North had every means to supply and take care of them. This was war crime. The one thing that stood out was the author's defense of Northern hypocrisy and atrocities.
