The Frankish state, the first large political unit established in early medieval Europe, existed from the late fifth to the middle of the ninth century. The state reached its height under Pepin’s son Charles the Great, whose reign lasted form from 768 to 814. Charles personally directed a military campaign nearly every year of his reign.
