In the eight years since his first full-length novel, Gridlinked, was published by Pan Macmillan, Neal Asher has firmly established himself as one of the leading British writers of science fiction, and his novels are now translated into many languages. Most of his stories are set in a galactic future-scape called The Polity, and with this collection of marvellously inventive and action-packed short stories, he takes us further into the manifold diversities of that amazing universe.

No one does monsters better than Neal Asher, so be prepared to revisit the lives and lifestyles of such favorites as the gabbleduck and the hooder, to savor alien poisons, the walking dead, the Sea of Death, and the putrefactor symbiont.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Gabble to be better than the print version?

The reader makes it easier to get into each story between transitions.

Who was your favorite character and why?

There was a great story of a gunslinger in a sci-fi setting named Snow.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I love Asher novels and the insipid black AI Penny royal always peaks my interest.

Any additional comments?

If you have not experienced the polity universe I would suggest starting with Gridlinked and pick this one up once you reach the Masada novel. I never liked sci fi before I read Ashers books. Somehow I always learn to love his best villains and any technology presented is backed by solid theory. This guy knows his stuff.

Not really a book in the series, but a series of short stories on which the Polity series is based or which are set in the Polity universe. It in no way continues the story line from the series. It alludes to things discovered in the books. Part of one of the short stories is included in one of the Polity books.

Neal Asher’s The Gabble and Other Stories is a collection of ten short stories and novellas all taking place in his Polity universe. Several tales involve the remnants of the Ather civilization. The narration is good with decent character distinction. Pacing is a tad brisk.
