Elizabeth, Pennsylvania was named after the beautiful, Elizabeth Mackay Bayard, the wife of Colonel Stephen Bayard, who along with Elizabeth’s brother, Samuel Mackay, founded the town in 1787. Elizabeth later became the bustling borough that it is still known for today in 1834. Their spirit is still felt today as Stephen's wife, Elizabeth walks aimlessly looking for her final resting place that was recklessly unearthed during a time when due care to the graves in the old cemetery were treated with a total diregard to the dead who were buried on "town hill." Virginia is for lovers, and if ghosts are an indication of everlasting love then Sarah & William have aternal love.....Their prestigious and highly distinguished mansion was originally designed and built by war hero and Brigadier General, Francis Preston in 1832 for a staggering $15,000 dollars as a private residence for his large family that included nine children. He adored his stunningly beautiful wife, Sarah Buchanan Preston, who was the daughter of General William Campbell who was a militia leader during the American Revolutionary War.
