October 1840. A young woman staggers alone through a forest in the English countryside as a huge pair of impossible wings rip themselves from her shoulders. In London, rumors of a fallen angel cause a frenzy across the city, and a surgeon desperate for fame and fortune finds himself in the grips of a dangerous obsession, one that will place the women he seeks in the most terrible danger...

The Gifts is an astonishing novel, a spellbinding tale told through five different perspectives and set against the luminous backdrop of nineteenth-century London. It explores science, nature and religion, enlightenment, the role of women in society, and the dark danger of ambition.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Tuppence Middleton offers distinct, character-appropriate voices to engage listeners, from a lord’s sneer as he disinherits his half-sister for being mixed-race to Orkney Islands brogue [...] An excellent pick for fans of Naomi Novik."—Library Journal

I really enjoyed this book and had difficulty putting it down. Excellent inventive plot, and I loved the way that details were revealed throughout the narrative, keeping me in suspense.

Page turner!

I am so conflicted about the best way to review this book. I will start by saying that I don’t understand why Amazon is not promoting it more. I discovered it from a book club website. It is a wondrous start. Full of imagination . It also speaks to the dangers of fanaticism and narrow focus. By all means read it. While it is late in the year it is one of my favorite books.
