Deeply influenced by his grandmother's faith and immersed in the fervent spirituality of his church—from fiery sermons to prayers spoken in tongues—author Scot Loyd once believed without question. But as he grew older, that belief began to shift. Confronted by the heavy demands of his religion, the racism that harmed his closest friend, and personal wounds too long ignored, he began to question the version of faith he had been given.

The God I Was Given is the story of letting go and searching for something more—a faith that is wider, more honest, and rooted in love. For anyone navigating spiritual change, this book offers both reflection and a way forward.

Through vivid storytelling and lyrical reflection, this book explores the deep influence of faith, family, and cultural identity in a small Southern community.

Hi Scot. I listened to the recent episode of CATCOA and wanted to reach out and tell you how much I love your book. I have listened to EVERY episode and, at first, struggled with your Pentecostal accent because I am a survivor of complex trauma at the hands of my Pentecostal stepfather. You have been such an important part of my deconstruction. You write brilliantly and honestly, and sometimes I laugh out loud by your choice of words (ragamuffin). I have a BS in Women’s Studies and am currently working towards my LCSW and your book does a great job of linking high control religions and the patriarchy. A few years ago I vowed to never read a book written by a white man and I am so glad I broke that rule for your book. My husband was raised Mormon (we are both atheists now) and your story has really helped me understand him better as well. I’m on part III of the book right now, listening on Audible. Thank you for being a part of my deconstruction journey

The prose is breath-taking. The story is vulnerable. reading this book expanded my perspective, challenged some of my views, and strengthened my capacity for empathy.

Scot is a great reader, and his life story really resonated with me as a survivor of the same cult. Some of his introspections helped me to see aspects of my journey in a new way, how I was holding onto some things in my marriage, and feelings I haven't shared with many people. Thank you for sharing your life, Scot. It really blessed me.
