Many of us have been taught to read Scripture as a collection of information that needs to be categorized, systematized, and analyzed verse by verse, concept by concept. But the Bible isn't a jigsaw puzzle, and it wasn't written in just Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. It was also written in the language of story. And as with every good story, we get to meet colorful characters, unravel mysteries, and see the world from a different point of view. It all makes more sense when understood from the perspective of storytelling.

In The God of Story, Daniel Schwabauer explores the narrative principles of theme, context, characterization, voice, and plot as a lens for understanding the cosmic story arc of God's relationship to humanity. By including creative retellings of biblical stories, he demonstrates how to engage Scripture with imagination.

For a fresh approach to reading the Bible and discovering how its stories connect to your own, start by learning to see God as the master storyteller.

This book has a depth of wisdom that simple and complex at the same time. Meaning anyone can understand it, but it offers more to those willing to seek it. After, reading it, I have a deeper appreciation for story and its role in Christianity, the bible, my personal life and those I care about. In the author’s words, a story is a vault for meaning. I imagine biblical teachers will read this book and think to themselves they wished they wrote it themselves.

The stories written down in Scripture are enveloped in beautiful literary forms, paradoxical profundity and multifaceted detail. All throughout them God has given us keys to understand them and enjoy them for all that they are. This book explores some of these keys and helps the reader to embark on a lifelong adventure to discover many more keys for themselves. God is writing HIStory, and He is inviting us to interact with a living Book, to recover the plot and experience the Abundant Life in Him that Jesus promised.

Re-enchanting our World

I enjoyed listening to this audiobook explaining story, and how it's told from a historic perspective as well as today's storytelling. The author has an amazing gift in telling the story (as we all so need to know how to tell the story) of the one true God and King Jesus Christ. All Glory to God! Lord willing, I will come back to this book and read it again.

Fantastic, a breath of fresh air.
