The world ended ten years ago.

Vampires showed up, took over, and turned the whole planet into their personal all-you-can-drink buffet. The president? Bloodsucker. The government? Bloodsuckers. My social life? Absolutely nonexistent.

But hey, at least I had one thing going for me―slayer training. My twin sister, Ripley, and I were about to go pro, officially joining the ranks of the last people on earth who actually do something about the whole "undead overlords" situation.

And then X had to show up. The vampire boogeyman. And instead of killing Ripley, like any decent monster would, he turned her. Now she's technically a vamp, but something tells me my sister is still in there.

What can I do? Break every rule. Lie to my friends. Strike a deal with the most dangerous vampire on the planet: X will protect Ripley from everyone else who wants her dead―like, really dead―until I can snag the cure for vampirism. The catch? Risking my own head to help him free his good-for-nothing BFF from the very slayers who taught me everything.

If I want Ripley back, I'm going to have to play nice with the thing that ruined my life. And the worst part?

I think he's enjoying this.

I’m giving this one 4 stars because it really pulled me in from the start. The world-building was vivid and easy to picture, and I loved how gritty everything felt without losing the emotional side of the story. Ruby is a strong, loyal character who isn’t perfect, and that made her feel real. The tension between her and X was one of my favorite parts; their uneasy alliance and the spark of something more kept me hooked.

The narrator did a great job bringing the world and characters to life. The performance made it easy to stay immersed through all the action and suspense.

If you like dystopian settings with vampires, fast-paced storytelling, and a good balance of heart and edge, this one’s worth the listen. YA-friendly but still intense enough to keep older readers engaged.

Gritty, Fast-Paced, and Surprisingly Emotional

Ruby and Ripley twins in a post apocalyptic world with vampires and blood walkers. They were trained as slayers. But what happens when Rip is turned and Ruby starts working with the enemy "X" a vampire in command.
Two populations trying to protect their own, both trying to survive, both working to eradicate the other in their own way. They will stop at anything to save their own.
X is possessive of Ruby, I don't think either of them understand.
Lesson learned in acceptance. Such a beautiful story underneath all of the tension.
The question is who is actually the enemy? The vampires or the humans?
Suspense, enemies working together, forced proximity, enemies to lovers, forbidden love, blood lust in humanity and the vampires. Again I ask which is worse?
10/10 Recommend!
I loved this story.

it took a bit for me to really get in to this book about half way. I felt the characters were a bit flat to start, they all felt scaractic and there was history with her and the hunt leader that I wouldve like to see more of. and X felt too desperate to start. but over all once I got in to the story it was good. I would definitely add the physical copy to my collection.
spoilers
I did not see X dad being Monroe I really thought in some twisted way it was going to be Barrnett. there was no spicy but there was heat I enjoyed. I still dont understand how she went from almost a slayer to so damn clumsy. I live the sister aspect but let me tell you the mist and her sister that was cruel! I started crying like wtf! but it seems to have been all wrapped up in a neat bow but with some questions that can be answered. I would get the next one if there is one just because I would like to see them all grow more.

pretty good

Oh wow, this was so much fun!!! The Ground that Devours Us is full of high stakes, heart-racing action, and sizzling romantic tension. If you liked Twilight, The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, and Warm Bodies, you're gonna LOVE this book!!!!

Dystopia + Vampires? Say less.
