In August 2009, a 39-year-old policewoman went missing in Tamil Nadu. A month later, her heavily decomposed body was discovered in a drain by a graveyard. She had been brutally violated and killed.

As the investigation started, the police detected a pattern in more than a dozen unsolved rape-and-murder cases with mutilated bodies of women turning up in graveyards, drains, and empty fields along the highways.

It didn’t take the police too long to find out that the perpetrator was a trucker named M Jaishankar.

What followed was a cat-and-mouse game across states, many more gruesome killings, one of the most sensational jailbreaks in the history of the country, and a controversial suicide in a high security cell.

The Highway Murders is the breathtaking true story of 'Psycho Shankar', one of India's most notorious serial killers, and one policeman's relentless decade-long battle against the 'terror of the highways'.

What I like about this book is that it really helps you look into the mind of a very twisted individual. Considering most of it is based on facts of the case, the author does a good job of merging these facts with fiction. The only thing I didn't like was the narrator but I sped it up and then it was fine.

A true inside look at a twisted mind

This was based on a true individual and the havoc he wrecked, but it was also reminiscent of the Ann Rule type of true crime novels. I’m sure there was some creative license taken with the inner thoughts of the characters, but it wasn’t too much. Really good story.

I can't believe the ease this killer escaped capture on two occasions. Its laughable that he escaped in 2013 using tactics of a carton character. I hope India has reformed some of the way it handles prisoners.

A very skillfully and thoughtfully told work of true crime. The narrator was fantastic too—a lovely voice, no over-acting, but very expressive.

Very Well Told, Great Narrator!
